Photography

The art of photography requires an eye for composition, color, and technique. Together with a mastery of sports movement – and sometimes emotion – the amalgamation is extraordinary.

During my tenure as editor in chief of Compass, Suffolk Community College's student newspaper, I instructed our sports editor to capture grimace as well as action.

"Grimace?" he asked, skeptically. "What's grimace?"

"Grimace," I explained, "is the look of disappointment on a player's face when they lose the championship. It's the sweat running down their cheek as they concentrate on the pitch going down the line... Grimace."

He smiled, nodded, and contemplatively said, "Okay... yeah... I can do that." After graduating, that sports photographer was hired by a major league baseball team.
